First to start my pit fired piece, I had to create the actual "structure" of the piece itself. At first I wanted to make a bowl, then I decided to make more of a vase instead. I made the top of the vase come out a little bit to change it up a little.
After I had the clay piece, and let it become a little bit harder, I painted it with "watered- down clay". After that process was completed, I let it dry some more.
Now it was time to add the design part to the piece, I added sticks, leaves, salt, and wire to the aluminium foil that I was going to wrap my piece in. After the clay was pit fired, It came out with a really cool burnt, lacy, effect. I thought it was interesting when one side had a lot of detail, and the other side had little to none. Lastly to finish off the process, we had to cover our entire clay piece in wax to "seal" the designs.
I do like doing this type of work. I think it is neat how you create your sculpture and then add to it, and then it comes out a cool pattern. It is neat because you never know what your piece will turn out like, it is like abstract work. I really like abstract work because no matter what you do to your art, it will always be unique and different from anyone else's.
