My type of sculpture is a clay tile. A clay tile is basically like a linoleum cut, but with clay, it is like a tile block, but with some type of object or detail on the block. For example, in my clay tile, I decided to sculpt a seahorse and a piece of coral beside it on the tile.
Directions: First role out a flat piece of clay, or use a slab to make your tile. You can use the wedging method to help massage the clay and to make sure all of the air bubbles are out of the clay.
Next you should use clay tools to cut the clay in the shape that you want the tile to be. Also to have the clay tools handy for your sculpture for what you want on the tile.
After you have all of your clay tools, and your clay is wedged. Next is to score and slip the clay. Scoring and slipping is the two rules for joining clay. You want to make sure your tile is together and that the ends aren't going to split. The picture on the left is a picture of scoring the clay joining the clay. The picture on the right is a picture of slipping the clay, slipping clay is when its more liquidy and that way if you need ends of the clay to stay together they will. Its basically like glue but in clay form.
Next is to create whatever you want to be on the tile, sculpt what you want with regular clay and use the slipping method to help attach it on to the clay tile. Or you could carve into the clay with a clay tool to make a design.
