Question 1: How has your thinking about art changed during the semester? Was there a particular unit where you learned a lot in?
My thinking about art has changed a lot since I first started this class. At the beginning or before I took this class, I looked at certain pieces of artwork and wondered how a person drew that. For example, perspective drawings or how people made their drawings look realistic. My overall view of art has changed drastically. Before I didn't realize theres so many ways to create art, such as using different materials, drawing from a different angles, shading to make things more realistic and so much more. Lastly my thinking about art has changed since I learned different terms and ways to "art". Like I said before, shading, composition, proportion, different line values, and perspectives. Speaking of perspectives , that leads me to the particular unit where I learned the most in. I defintely learned the most and improved the most with perspective drawings! For example we drew hallways at the perspective as if you were walking down one. Down below i have a picture of before I learned how to draw a hallway and after.

You can see the huge difference between the first and second picture. In the first picture, the lockers are facing the wrong way and I didn't know how to/ start it and make the ceiling either. In the second picture, I even added a bathroom entrance and it looks like you can actually walk into it. You can tell how just learning simple tricks can make a vast improvement to your artwork.
Another example how I learned from perspective drawings is above. In the first picture I didn't know how to draw the lines to make the pier look like its going back and I also didn't know how to draw the ocean making it look like you're walking down the beach.
I used a lot of different techniques that I learned to make my perspective drawings a lot more realistic . This is the big unit where my artwork changed for the better!
Question 2: What do you notice about your art making skills, including how you interpret themes, have changed when you compare your drawing from the beginning of the course to your more recent one ?
My art working skills have also changed since the beginning of the course. Instead of making boring artwork I have learned to make it my own and make it creative by using different materials or thinking outside of the box. How I interpret themes has also changed, instead of thinking of the first thing that comes to mind I have thought about how to make it different and unique.
Above are two drawings, one from the beginning of the year, and the second one is a recently drawn picture. What I decided to do, is to not change the re-drawn one as much, to still keep it simple but to add to it. The re-drawn picture has improved drawings of the fish and sharks. I really focused on using detail and adding pops of color to each of the fish. I also added different sea animals and made them all look different instead of all the fish looking the same. Also I colored the second drawing and decided to shade the bottom of the ocean darker than the top because at the top of the ocean there is more light. Perspective played a big role in this drawing too, I drew the boat there again to show how big the shark and the other fish are compared to the boat. Having to draw the fish, shark, and jelly fish from a different angle added with perspective as well. Even though I kept the first and re-drawn drawing very simple and similar, I added more to the second one to make it different and not just a drawing of underwater animals.
Question 3: What unit or project was your favorite? Why did you like it?
My favorite art project would be the one where we had limitations. Shown below is my artwork.
I decided for my limitation to only be newspaper. I have seen newspaper dresses before and I thought they looked really neat! Since I could only use newspaper, I had to make the "mannequin" and the stand out of newspaper which was very hard to do. I liked this project the best because it was very challenging, but I worked my way through and thought outside of the box to make everything work how I planned it out to be. Some challenges I faced was making the stand sturdy enough to set the top part on top of it. Also, folding the newspaper to make the dress took me a while to figure out. It turned out even better than I thought and it is my favorite piece of art from this semester!
Question 4: What did you like about this class? What could have made it better for you in terms of learning?
I enjoyed this class very much! I liked how I had to be more creative to think of different art work and to find my artistic style. I liked all of the different units we did, every single one I learned something. Joining this class made my drawing skills much better, showing me how techniques can change a piece of art for the better. I love learning how to make and or draw new art! I learned how art doesn't just come in one form and how you can draw, paint, sculpt and so much more. What could have made it better for me, in terms of learning, would maybe going step by step on how to draw certain things like we did drawing the hallway. I think that helped me learn a lot more and now I can do it by myself without needing to look at a picture or steps on how to do it.
Comparing my original pre-assessment with my most recent one:
Lastly I am going to compare my pre- assessments!
What is art?
List some reasons that an artist would need to use observation when making artwork.
Is copying always plagiarism or is there gray area?
What are some reasons why artists make art?
What kinds of problems might artists encounter as they plan, make and share art?
What is artistic style?
What is the point of this class? What do you think you'll get out of it?
Lastly I am going to compare my pre- assessments!
What is art?
- These two answers are both the same! I put on both that it is a way to express yourself or something and how you can make art in different ways, or using different materials.
List some reasons that an artist would need to use observation when making artwork.
- My two answers for this is about the same as well, I said it was important to use observations to make the work have more meaning and to make it more realistic.
Is copying always plagiarism or is there gray area?
- I said no for both of my answers! I said no because as long as your ideas are still in your work it isn't plagiarism. Using someone else's ideas to make your work better or to add to it is alright. Also as long as that persons work is still original, I think it's sometimes better to copy because it take two works and makes one great one!
What are some reasons why artists make art?
- In the first and second pre-assessment, I said some reasons artists make art is to express themselves or to prove a point in their art. Or to put what they are thinking about in art not words. I added to my recent assessment that an artist might make art to be unique and creative to make different pieces!
What kinds of problems might artists encounter as they plan, make and share art?
- In the first assessment I said facing problems such as a work not looking realistic as much , or color mixes not looking right. When I was writing this I think I only had painting and drawing in mind, not all the different forms of art. For the recent assessment I put, planning something and the plan not working out, and using a certain material but it ends up not working while your'e making your art. I think my answer changed because of doing the "Artists Solve Problems" unit. That unit made me realize how things might not work or go as planned but that why you have to really think to be able to solve those problems.
What is artistic style?
- In the beginning, I put it is different ways of art, or different style of the artists. My second answer was a way an artist represents their work. Some examples would be using certain types of materials, forms, people for your artwork. I extended on this answer from the last because we learned about different artists and how some would use metal to create their work or for example how Patrick Doughtery used sticks to make his work, that is artistic style.
What is the point of this class? What do you think you'll get out of it?
- My first answer was to learn different techniques and to become a better artist. My second answer is that this class was a way to represent yourself and to find your personal art style. I learned new techniques on how to "art" and seeing what type of art I like making best. You can tell from my second answer that I have learned a lot more over the course.
A picture of both of my pre-assessments!
Above is my original pre-assessment.
Above is my recent pre-assessment.
Overall, I am so glad I decided to take this class. I learned so much about art and about my personal art style. I will remember a lot of the techniques that I learned throughout this class and it will help me later when I am "arting"!
